1998 Celebrations

The Second Annual Gala Dinner was held at the beautiful Kona Kai Continental Plaza Resort & Marina located on Shelter Island in San Diego on Saturday, May 16, 1998.

The theme for 1998 was the building of a cultural bridge between Norway and San Diego using the native costumes of Norway as the method.
A "Bridge of Bunad" Contest was conducted, judged on both costume and presentation. The Committee enlisted the support and guidance of the icon on the subject of native costumes, Ms. Aagot Noss, Curator at Norsk Folkemuseum, Oslo. The participants in the Bunad Competition were encouraged to bring a message from their hometown mayor or other officials as well as the town emblem. Each table for 10 was named after a village, town or city in Norway.

Dinner guests were treated to a folk costume show and dancing to the
Big Band & Jazz Hall of Fame Orchestra, conducted by David S. Murray.

Dr. Paul O.W. Tanner, with musical roots as a member of the original Glenn Miller band, was in attendance. Dr. Tanner has made a special arrangement of Edvard Grieg’s "Ved Rondane" for the occasion, and conducted the orchestra in the premiere performance of this piece.
