Takk for maten speaker: Roy Tobin

Roy W. Tobin, Captain United States Navy (retired), was born in California to a family of "Celto-Germanic ancestry, the largest part of which was Norwegian." Raised in the rural San Joaquin Valley he attended public schools and colleges before enlisting in the Navy in 1966. Captain Tobin says he never considered himself a true volunteer as his Army draft notice reached him in Boot Camp.

He was assigned to Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island following recuit training and commissioned an Ensign in December of 1966. He served the next several years at sea in minesweepers, frigates, destroyers, amphibious ships and cruisers as Chief Engineer or Executive Officer. These years took him to most parts of the World.

From 1985-1988 he commanded the USS KINKAID (DD 965). He then served one year as Director of Operations for the Middle East Task Force before commanding the USS JASON (AR 8). During the Gulf War he took Jason to the Northern Persian Gulf where the ship became involved in repairs to the two US warships which struck mines and in reopening the Kuwaite port of Ash Shwaiba.

Captain Tobin's last four years in the Navy were as Commander South West Regional Maintenance Center, responsible for maintenance to Navy ships in San Diego. He retired in June 1997 after 31 years of service, 19 of which had been sea duty. His decorations include the Legion of Merit (three awards) and the Bronze Star. His favorite decoration is the Sea Service Deployment ribbon (six awards).

Captain Tobin lives with Marilyn, his wife of 39 years, in Encinitas. They have two children, Dr. Joshua Tobin of Phoenix and Amanda Tobin Schleef of Eureka. Since retirement, Tobin has busied himself with reading, writing, learning and travel. He is the current Vice President of Norge Lodge, Sons of Norway, a student in Erling Nyhammer's Norwegian language class and a member of San Diego Mennskor.
